Presentation

Quickly.  In how many different ways can we classify our students?  By age, gender, level of English, social background, academic abilities?  We seem to be more aware of diversity than ever, devising a multitude of ways to differentiate: learning styles, personality, "multiple intelligences", language aptitudes, disability, tastes and interests. At first glance, we see an amorphous mass of students.  A closer look reveals a thousand and one variations.  This game of "Spot the Difference" can go on forever.

Demographic trends and the recent educational reforms lead to even greater diversity.  We can all remember our  first shocking experience which made us aware of the fact: with a younger age group than what we had previously been used to (1º de ESO or Infantil, for example); a blind, deaf or mentally disabled student; the bilingual child of returned emigrants or the Polish or Dutch-speaking offspring of a football player recruited for a Galician team.

This heightened awareness is coupled with a growing commitment to catering to diversity.  What hasn’t increased is the amount of resources we have in which to do our job.  Herein lies the challenge.  We have to use what we have at hand: what someone has called tools. We aren’t just talking about "equipment" or "teaching recipes", but our own, inner resources.  The objective of this year’s conference is to help us sharpen these tools to face the challenge of catering to diversity.

Of course, our strength as a professional collective is our own diversity; we bring so many different talents and experiences to our field.  For this reason, we have been trying to make our teacher training events as varied as possible, to show different angles to issues and present alternative approaches.  As one theorist said, there’s no perfect, one-size-fits-all methodology, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying something new to see how it works in our particular context, using our personal set of "tools".

Therefore, we hope that these xornadas offer something for everyone, from the recent graduate fresh from CAP to those teachers who feel they have "seen it all".  Remember that, whatever sector or group you represent,  your contributions are valued, be it in workshop discussions or post-conference feedback.

They say that teacher training has a delayed, "ripple" effect so that its impact isn’t felt straightaway.  Perhaps last year’s theme, The Whole Picture, ties in nicely with this year’s emphasis on diversity.  Only by working together, with each individual making his or her contribution and feeling that his or her part is valued, can we go forward as a profession.

Things to remember

VENUES: All activities will take place at I.E.S. Pontepedriña, except for the Opening and Closing Plenaries and Closing Play, that will take place at the Faculty of Philology (North Campus, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela)

IDENTIFICATION: You should wear your identification badges during all activities. At the end of the conference, please leave your badge in the box by the Information Desk so that we can re-use them and be kinder to the environment.

INFORMATION: For queries, complaints, and so on, please refer to our attendants at the Information Desk. Check out the latest changes and announcements on the board.

PUNCTUALITY: All workshops start on the dot. To avoid overcrowding, we may be forced to limit the admission to certain workshops. Try to be punctual and always have a second choice.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE: Participants fulfilling the official requirements (DOGA, 13/1/1995), will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance for 23 hours.

Avoid unfair and unpleasant situations by not asking for a certificate unless you have complied with the conditions.

Certificates can be collected after the closing plenary from 6.00pm to 6.20pm on Saturday evening, and then again after the performance at 8.00pm. Please do not queue after 6.20pm or else we will be delaying the performance.

EVALUATION CARD: If you begin filling in your evaluation card in advance, you will have a better idea of what workshops you’ll attend. Don’t forget to hand it in at the end of the conference; the feedback of participants helps us run better workshops.

PLAYS: Again, there will be two plays this year. Airport 2000 by Moving On - that's Saturday evening, and a play by Colin Granger at 1.30 on Friday, at the school.

MONOGRAPHICS: You don’t have to register for the monographic courses in advance. Moreover, you can either attend the whole series or individual sessions. The monographics this year are:

·         Watch the Difference: Working with Multimeda and Web materials (I, II and III)

·        Daring for Diversity: a whole world of questions... And some answers

POSTERS. Join colleagues at the Speakers’ Corner and see what they’re doing in their classes through the new poster system we are offering this year. Each presenter will be available for questions and comments for three breaks. Check their times on the notice board or drop a message with your address at the Information Desk.

LAST MINUTE CHANGES All changes will be posted on the board by the Information Desk.

APIGA’s Xornadas are never intended to be all work and no play. Meet new and old colleagues and friends at the RECEPTION offered by A.P.I.GA. and Richmond Publishing to all participants on Thursday evening.
