XXIII Xornadas Didácticas do Inglés

A World of Difference

Vila Termal Laias - Laias, Cenlle - April 20, 21, 22 2007

It´s already a tradition. The modern Balneario de Laias in Cenlle, Ourense is ready to hold our XXIII Xornadas this year. Great place, amazing spa and lovely riverside views are waiting for us the next 20, 21, 22 April, well into spring time so we can enjoy warm weather and longer days. We’ll keep the usual structure of a packed weekend, enjoying talks by guest speakers such as Simon Marshall (Pilgrims), Anne Lennon (British Council), Robert Quinn (Oxford), Susana Sanz (MacMillan), Mela Rodríguez (Apiga) and many more together with a Cleverpants play and a Saturday Night Show by R&B Band Degüello. Check the details on our webpage and register before the deadline.

This year´s motto is “A World of Difference”. Where does this expression slot into our professional context?

Diversity is a well-covered topic. It has been examined from learning styles to emotional intelligences to the increasingly multiracial reality of our schools. Our society celebrates differences and the unique nature of each person. And we all know that language learning is very much an individual process. Yet even the most seasoned teacher finds catering to diversity a challenge. Perhaps the Portfolio will provide some solutions. Contrasts. Off our tongues comes “There’s a world of difference between adults and adolescents” or “City schools are a whole different ballgame from their rural counterparts”. The joy of getting together for this conference is in defining our own circumstances better and of meeting others in the same. A second, unexpected, pleasure is finding out what we have in common with colleagues from very different contexts. The theory versus practice debate also usually makes us think that academics and practitioners are a world apart. Conferences open the dialogue between us and allow us to make our eclecticism more informed.

Pluralism is exciting. For our personal development, we want to know about the differences in the English-speaking world: new literary and cultural angles.

Best of all is the world of difference a small innovation or “re-think” can make to our teaching practice. This change is what coming to the annual conference is all about!
